Manchester exhibition for Bowdon Artist
Bowdon based artist, Colin Taylor, is set for further success as the Contemporary Six Art Gallery in Manchester hosts his latest solo exhibition, ‘New lines in Space’. The exhibition will include paintings and drawings developed as part of the commission of twelve paintings for the atrium of No.1 Spinningfields. This new landmark development sits in the heart of the Spinningfields district of Manchester and has been designed by the award-winning international firm of architects, Simpson Haugh & Partners. There will be a preview evening on 31st May followed by a 3-week exhibition to run from 1st June to 21st June.
The use of either photography or video to record a buildings evolution is quite traditional, but the series of paintings interpreting the two-year transformation is a more unusual concept. Colin Taylor explains more
” I was commissioned to do the twelve paintings at No 1 Spinningfields when it was quite literally a hole in the ground, and began by drawing from a helicopter, 1,000 feet above the city centre and then as the buildings structural framework began to take shape, from within the site itself. The body of work is a painted time-lapse that reflects the evolving form of the building as it grows within its crowded city centre space. The entire commission has taken months and has generated far more than just the twelve paintings for No. 1 Spinningfields, hence the decision to hold the exhibition. When approached Contemporary Six were very excited about this city centre commission and suggested an exhibition of some of the other work.”
Colin records different places- not only cityscapes but also natural environments, mountains, busy streets, or a crowd at a festival. His work is a form of visual autobiography. Although based in Cheshire his work goes far beyond and he has had solo exhibitions in New York, Cologne, Washington DC and Paris. This latest commission marks a return to his home ground and is eagerly anticipated. Colin's website can be found here. The painting at the top of the article is No 1 Spinningfields #3
A limited number of tickets are available for the preview evening on 31 May 2017. For further information and to book please contact Contemporary Six.
