Co-working comes to Altrincham
Altspace, Altrincham’s new permanent co-working space, launched today – the 4th January – above the Nat West bank on Stamford New Road. This exciting development for Altrincham is an idea that was conceived in the trendy London areas of Hoxton and Shoreditch where shared space has been popular for some time. Altspace is a shared working space with all the facilities of the normal office environment in which freelancers and homeworkers can rent desk space.
There are many benefits to co-working for freelancers and home workers – ranging from getting away from the washing up and other home distractions to having someone to bounce ideas off. Altspace has room for 16 to 18 workers with the area divided into different zones. There is a meeting room that can be used for client appointments and presentations, a quiet zone and a break out area. WiFi is provided, of course, and free tea and coffee. Steve Upham, the man behind Altspace, is a real coffee buff and will be providing some quality blends and a top-notch coffee machine!

The desks and chairs have been selected with ergonomic features in mind. Steve did a lot of research into the furniture and is pleased to have sourced the “BMW of office chairs” - orange box chairs. We popped in for a coffee today and found the space warm and welcoming and can confirm that those chairs are very comfortable! The space also has a roof terrace with a great view over Altrincham and beyond. We could see the hills!

Steve moved up North from London earlier in the year with a plan to develop the co-working idea in Manchester. Steve has links locally and was aware of Altrincham’s resurgence as a thriving business centre with a high number of new start-ups making it an ideal location for his new venture. Steve used to work for Channel 4 in London and moved to Manchester whilst still working in TV. However, he had started working on a business plan three years ago, having had positive experiences of co- working in London himself.
Steve is keen to be part of the local community. He has contacted local business networks and has found SUBS Altrincham and Parentpreneur Networking very helpful. During the last six months, he has tried out different local venues with Altrincham Jelly – pop up co-working sessions - but is now delighted to have a permanent home.
Altspace has break out areas as well as desk areas
Steve offers flexible rates ranging from £210 for a desk for a month to a pay as you go day rate of £14. There is no contract and Steve is determined to make Altspace affordable and flexible. Altspace is just the beginning and Steve would like to be able to offer more spaces in bigger premises in the future, perhaps even incorporating a crèche and café. Find out more here.
