Altrincham businesswoman supports Fair Trade

Altrincham businesswoman helps Moroccan women’s co-operatives to export Fair Trade Argan Oil

Local business woman, Christine Cellier Clarke, recently went to Agadir in Morocco to give a workshop to local Berber women to help them to export their fair trade argan oil.

Christine imports argan oil for her Broadheath business, Cocoon Therapies, and is the sole UK partner for the UCFA, the first and largest union of Berber Women’s Cooperatives in South Morocco. She is keen to ensure that the women receive a fair price for their product and that they are aware of the correct tariffs to use when exporting their product. Incorrect use of tariffs is potentially illegal so it is very important for the sustainability of the business that the co-operatives use them correctly.

Christine delivered the training with Florence Bonnard, Export Manager for Imaje, an American company based in France.  Florence shared her expertise in compliance, audit responsibility, identifying correct trade tariffs and export legality. Christine highlighted the expectations of overseas customers and the potentially damaging effect of delays or quality issues on their businesses.

A better understanding of correct export methods will help the co-operatives to become certified exporters, releasing them from paperwork, saving time and improving efficiency. Christine is passionate about ensuring that the women in the co-operatives maximise the profit from their argan oil as it is the only means of support for their communities.

Christine discovered Moroccan argan oil a few years ago, when she was looking for a high-quality massage oil for her massage practice based in Hale. She found that argan oil was ideal and she was fascinated by the story behind the production of the oil in a traditional way in women’s cooperatives in Morocco. Christine visited Morocco for the first time herself and met the Berber women who produce the oil.

It was Christine’s determination to ensure that the women were paid a fair price for their product that led to them appointing her as the sole UK partner for the UCFA. So, buying your Spicy Beard Oil or Happy Lips from Cocoon Therapies isn’t just good for your skin- it also helps to provide a sustainable income for 1000 women and their families.
