How to be Happy

You meet some interesting people at Altrincham Market. Sitting outside the Market Hall with a glass of wine on a Spring evening and chatting to Toni Mackenzie was a fascinating experience. Toni is a hypnotherapist and life coach based in Altrincham. She has loads of experience both personal and professional to share and great advice to give on the very thing that so many of us struggle with – how to be happy.

Toni started her therapeutic career as a person-centred counsellor offering non-directional support to a variety of clients. Listening to her clients made her realise the power of the subconscious and of the experiences, sometimes in the distant past, that were affecting their happiness. Toni decided that she wanted to offer more active therapies to help clients to tackle these issues. This led her to a career of continuous learning and the accumulation of a huge amount of experience of the human condition. Combined with lashings of compassion and humour and you have a woman equipped to help many people turn their lives around.  

Today, Toni is qualified in many different types of therapy. Her website  lists them – Mind-Set Coach, Happiness Expert, Counsellor, Psychotherapist, Hypnotherapist and Life Coach to name but a few. The therapies take different approaches. For example, as a Life Coach, Toni will help clients to focus on where they want to be in life. The sessions will involve breaking down the journey to achieving that goal into manageable steps. As a Mind Set Coach, Toni enables clients to be more open to positive ideas which will help them to achieve their goals.  

Toni believes that many of the issues that we suffer from result from a lack of self-awareness and a failure to understand how our past experiences affect the way that we think and behave.  She explains that babies are born with only two fears – falling and loud noises. Every other fear is learned. This shocking fact underlies many psychological and emotional issues. Fortunately, Toni believes that everyone can be helped to overcome experiences that have damaged them. She has worked with people who have suffered serious abuse and seen them overcome their fears and reclaim their lives. 

One of the most common fears is not being ‘good enough’ which results in low self-esteem and lack of confidence.  This fear originates in our habit of constantly comparing ourselves to others. Of course, this has always been a problem for some but Toni points to the role that society’s relatively recent addiction to social media can play. I’m sure we have all noticed how much more exciting our friend’s Facebook lives are than our own and how difficult it is to resist the urge to compare ourselves unfavourably to the perfect faces and bodies of perfect celebrities on Instagram!  Adding exam and career pressure to this results in a toxic brew and the potential for unhappiness. So how can we be happy?

Toni’s advice is simple - stop comparing and you will be free! Her successful book ‘Your flight to happiness –  a Seven-Step Journey to Emotional Freedom’  - Toni was a member of cabin crew in a previous life - explains how to achieve this.
